Open Publishing at Maynooth University

Maynooth University Library collaborates with a number of academic colleagues under the Maynooth Academic Publishing namespace on supporting and hosting their Open Journal publishing initiatives using diamond Open Access principles. We currently have 4 academic peer-reviewed journals published under the Maynooth Academic Publishing namespace with the editorial process managed by academic experts and hosting support and DOI provision managed by the Library. Maynooth University is strongly committed to open access and this has driven our endeavours to support Open Access library based publishing.

Why do Libraries support Open Publishing

  • Opportunity to address local needs and promote research
  • Encouragement of Open Access publishing models and permissive licencing allowing a greater volume of high-quality Open Access scholarship
  • Giving authors greater control over how their work is published and disseminated
  • Facilitates publication of niche / very specialised topics, conference proceedings, grey literature, alternative formats etc, that may not fit the traditional publishing models
  • Cost consideration in an era of rising subscription prices
  • Expertise of library staff very transferable to local publishing support
