Open Access Policy Developments

A guide for Academics interested in Open Access and identifying how to make their research available via Open Access

SFI updates its Open Access Policy

In December 2020, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) updated its Open Access Policy. In this very useful blog post NUI Galway Library looks  at why this happened and what it means for current and future grant holders. It includes the background of the Open Access movement including the NORF Framework and COAlition S and then goes on to explore what is new in the SFI Open Access Policy for 2021 and  the implications for compliance on recipients of SFI funding.

Deals with publishers relating to Open Access are discussed at the end of the blog. The Irish Consortium IREL has negotiated a number of transformative deals (to waive Article Processing Charges) with publishers such as Elsevier, American Institute of Physics, Electrochemical Society and the Royal Irish Academy.  There are more deals being negotiated and this will be an ongoing process.  IREL began to negotiate these deals in 2020.
