Open Access Publishing Agreements

Introduction

This guide provides details of open access agreements with publishers facilitated by IReL (Irish Research eLibrary) which typically allow corresponding authors from eligible institutions to publish their articles open access immediately on publication.

Open Access Publishing Agreements

To date IReL has enabled 26 Transformative Publishing Agreements across many disciplines.

Several of these agreements are based on a fixed number of OA articles per year. We will update users if/when these allocations are nearly exhausted.

Typically, articles approved for publication in a calendar year cannot be made open access with credits from the following calendar year.

Please be aware that the length of peer reviewing processes with individual publishers may therefore impact an author’s ability to utilise these OA agreements.  Please contact the relevant publisher for further information.

If you would like further information please contact library.openaccess@mu.ie

Open Access  refers to unrestricted online access to articles published in scholarly journals, and also increasingly to book chapters or monographs. There are many benefits to publishing your research output as Open Access.

Find out more about MU Library Open Access Publishing Agreements by going to the appropriate section in this guide. Here you will find full details of all current agreements, which publishers are covered and who can make use of these agreements.

IReL principles for Open Access publisher agreements from 2020

  • Agreements should cover both the read costs (reader access to subscription content) and publication costs (for publishing Open Access articles from IReL members). Increased spending on publication should result in proportionately lower spending on subscription fees.
  • All articles from corresponding authors based in member institutions be immediately Open Access on publication at no additional cost outside the agreement.
  • Open Access publication of author’s articles is available across all the publisher’s titles, including hybrid titles.
